George Gessert was born in 1944 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received a BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MA in painting and serigraphy from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Since 1985 his work has focused on the overlap of art and genetics. He has exhibited at the Exploratorium (San Francisco); Smithsonian Institution; Le Lieu Unique (Nantes,); 2nd Biennial of Electronic Arts (Perth, Australia); Central Museum (Utrecht); Museum of Contemporary Art (Seville) and Zeche Zollverein (Essen). His writings have appeared in numerous books and periodicals. In 2005 he was awarded a Pushcart Prize, and in 2007 David Foster Wallace included one of his texts in Best American Essays. Gessert has served as editor for art and biology for Leonardo since 1996.
